Baking Waste Into Wealth
Naturally, the sight of a person at this deserted and abandoned site just outside Chinsapo
Market in Lilongwe attracts inquisitive eyes. Those in a hurry would easily dismiss such
person as insane. The site is littered with plastic bags flying in the wind and flapping
from shrubs like little flags. Rhoda Siyani spends most of her days on the site. She is as
sane as a church elder. Her dirty tools and clothes are a result of the work she does.
Her script is short yet powerful. She never spent years studying engineering but she is an 'engineer.'
She never went into an Art College but she is mastery of needlecraft. Gertrude Damiano, 33, is a rare gem in her
Dzandi Village in Dedza. She looks ordinary but how she blends science and art is uniquely admirable.
